Microvascalur Treatment of Hemifacial Spasm






Abstract
Vascular compression of the facial nerve at the brain stem entry zone, usually by an adjacent artery, has been considered as the cause of the hemifacial spasm. Althought many approach have been tried to treat the hemifacial spasm, microvascular
decompression (MVD) of the facial nerve at the brain stem has been acccepted as the treatment of choice for this involuntary disorders.
Between February 1980 and December 1992, 130 patients with typical hemifacial spasm underwen; microvascular decompression in our institution. 121 (93.1%) of 130 patients achieved good or excellent results with a follow up mean of 4.4 years. Based
on
this initial series of microvscular decompression to the patients with typical hemifacial spasm, author concluded that microvascular decompression continues to be a safe and effective approach to relieve the typical hemifacial spams.
